He was nominated for a Tony Award for his lead role in Speed of Darkness, and his role in The Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989) was critically acclaimed, but its limited release prevented the film from really needing of a wide audience of successful. He is the recipient of dozens of theatre awards, including the Drama Desk Award and the Helen Hayes Award. Long attended a Quaker boarding school (high school) in Newton, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Swarthmore College (a private liberal arts college in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania) in 1973 with a degree in English Literature Bachelor of Science. On May 30, 2010, he was awarded an honorary university degree by his alma mater in recognition of his outstanding achievements in theatre, television and film. Lang has been married to costume designer Kristina Watson since June 1, 1980. They have four children together.
