Stephen Hawking is a British theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and educator. He is best known for his work on black holes and relativity. He suffers from the rare neurological disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als). Hawking was born on January 8, 1942 in Oxford, England. His parents are Frank (d. 1986) and Isabelle (d. 2013). He has three siblings, Mary, Edward and Philippa. Hawking developed a keen interest in science and the sky from an early age. His illness began in his final year at Oxford University. He was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 21 while studying cosmology at Cambridge University.

Hawking received a BA in Natural Sciences (1962) from Oxford University. He completed his PhD in Cosmology at the University of Cambridge (1965). His 1965 paper “The Properties of the Expanding Universe” was inspired by Roger Penrose. An educator, he has taught mathematics at Cambridge for 30 years. Hawking has authored several books, including A Brief History of Time (1988), On the Shoulders of Giants (2002) and A Brief History of Me (2013). He has received numerous awards, including the Adams Award (1966), the Albert Einstein Award (1978), and the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom. Part of his life story is depicted in the biographical film The Theory of Everything (2014). The film is directed by James Marsh and stars Eddie Redmayne.
