Stephen Colbert is an American comedian, talk show host, actor and author. His TV credits include The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and Candy Stranger. He currently hosts the CBS talk show The Late Show. Stephen Tyrone Colbert was born on May 13, 1964 in Washington, DC and grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, the youngest of 11 children. His father James and his two siblings Paul and Peter were killed in a plane crash in September 1974. His mother Lorna died in 2013 at the age of 93. Colbert attended Bishop Porter-Gaud School in Charleston. He studied philosophy at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia before transferring to Northwestern University. He graduated in 1986 with a BA in Drama.

Colbert moved to Chicago immediately after graduating from college in 1986. He took office jobs and took improv classes with the Second City Comedy Troupe. During his tenure, he performed with their tour group for two years. There, he met comedians Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. The trio created the comedy sketch series “Exit 57”. The show ran for 12 episodes on Comedy Central from 1995 to 1996. Three years later, they launched another TV series, “Candy Stranger,” on Comedy Central. It ran for 3 seasons from 1999 to 2000. A feature film of the same name directed by Dinello was released in 2005. Colbert appeared in 14 episodes of Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2011. He was a reporter and writer for The Daily Show from 1997 to 2005, where he worked with Jon Stewart. He voiced the adult animated series Harvey Birdman, The Lawyer (2001-07). His voiceovers also include Adventure Brothers, American Dad! , Crank Yonkers, The Simpsons and Bojack the Horseman.
Colbert began hosting his own late-night talk show/news satire on Comedy Central in 2005. The show ran for 10 seasons, ending in December 2014. The show has won multiple awards, including multiple Emmys, 2 Grammys, and 2 Peabody Awards. Colbert succeeded David Letterman as the new host of The Late Show on CBS in September 2015. He made a cameo appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), starring Ian McKellen. His film credits also include Bewitched (2005) with Nicole Kidman, and The Love Guru (2008) with Mike Myers. He voiced “The President” for the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) and “Paul Peterson” for Peabody and Mr. Sherman (2014). Colbert began hosting “Kennedy Center Honors” in December 2014. He was the host of the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles, California.
In addition to television, Colbert is an accomplished writer. His book “I Am America (You Can!)” was published by Grand Central Publishing in October 2007. Published a book of the same name in 2012, “I’m Polish” (you can too!). He co-authored the novel Wigfield (2004) with Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello.
