He was born on May 10, 1925, to Stephen David Bechtel, Jr., the third generation of one of the wealthiest families in America, the Bectel family. His grandfather, Warren Bechtel, was the founder of Bechtel Corp., an architecture and engineering firm known for major projects including the Channel Tunnel, Hoover Dam and Jubail.
Having graduated from Purdue University and an MBA from Stanford University, he joined the company in 1948. At the age of 35, he became president and served as chairman from 1973 until his retirement in 1990, when his son Riley took over the company. As an Eagle Scout, in 2009 Bechtel donated $50 million to the Boy Scouts of America to help create a 10,600-acre new Boy Scouts Sanctuary in West Virginia named The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. Now a non-executive director on the board, Bechtel is believed to own 20 percent of the company, which earned $37.9 million in 2012. Additionally, in April 2013, the company made an anonymous payment to Planetary Resources, an asteroid mining company, along with Ross Perot Jr. and Google CEO Larry Page.
