Stephen A. Smith is an American sports journalist, radio host, actor and television personality. He currently hosts ESPN First Take with Molly Qerim and Max Kellerman. He has been on ESPN’s SportsCenter and NBA Countdown. Stephen Anthony Smith was born on October 14, 1967 in the Bronx, New York. His mother’s name was Janet. He has 5 siblings and a half-brother. Smith grew up in Queens, New York, and attended Thomas Edison High School. He briefly studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology before entering Winston-Salem State University on a basketball scholarship. He graduated in Mass Communication in 1991. He is a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

Smith played college basketball at Winston-Salem State University. He trains under coach Clarence Gaines. He was inducted into the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in 2017. Smith’s career spanned print media, radio and television. From 1994 to 2007, he was a writer and general sports columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer. During his tenure, he covered the Philadelphia 76ers as an NBA columnist. He has also worked with the Greensboro News and Records and the New York Daily News. Smith made his debut on New York City radio station “WEPN-FM” in 2005. From 2007 to 2008, he hosted “The Stephen Smith and Ryan Rucker Show” on ESPN Radio. He worked with Fox Sports Radio from 2009 to 2011. While on Fox, he predicted that LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade would all sign with the Miami Heat in 2010. Smith returned to ESPN radio briefly in 2011. In 2014, he began hosting “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on SiriusXM Radio on Chris Russo’s Mad Dog Sports Radio.

Smith made his television debut on CNN Sports Illustrated (CNNSI) in 1999. He is now a talk show host and analyst for ESPN and ESPN First Take. From August 2005 to January 2007, he performed “very candidly with Stephen A. Smith” on a nightly one-hour show. The show’s guests include John McCain, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O’Neal and Dion Sanders. Smith was a judge on the reality show “Dream Job.” He has also appeared on other ESPN shows such as Pardon the Interrupt, Jim Rome Is Burning and SportsCenter. He was part of the broadcast team for the 2016 Manny Pacquiao-Jesse Vargas pay-per-view match.

Smith played “Ellen” in the romantic comedy I Think I Love My Wife (2007). Actor Chris Rock directed, produced and starred in the film. The main cast also includes Kerry Washington, Gina Torres and Steve Buscemi. The film grossed $13 million at the box office. Smith made several appearances on the medical series “General Hospital”. He started appearing in Oberto’s all-natural beef jerky ads in 2014.
