He studied at the London School of Economics in 1968 and received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1968. In 1970 he obtained a master’s degree in logic and scientific method.
He went on to study for a Ph.D., and in 1974 received a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics. His father was the Greek shipping magnate John Lazis, who died in 2003. Following the death of John Latsis in 2003, Spiros Latsis took over the direction of the Latsis Group of companies. The family’s largest holding company is the Luxembourg-based private banking group EFG Bank European Financial Group. The Latsis family wealth, managed by Spiro Latsis, includes more than 42% of Hellenic Petroleum, a major southern European oil company through its ownership of Paneuropean Oil and Industrial Holdings SA. The Latsis Group also controls the Athens-based real estate group Lamda Development. Lamda developments include The Mall Athens, which opened in 2005, and Golden Hall Mall, also located in Athens. Latsis also founded PrivateAir, a charter service with more than 50 planes serving wealthy European and American travelers, which he has since sold. He is the second richest living Greek.
