Sonny James is an American country singer, songwriter, and music producer. From the 1950s to the 1980s, he achieved legendary status with a string of Billboard chart-topping singles. He was born James Hugh Loden on May 1, 1928, in Hackburg, Alabama. His parents Archie and Della Loden are also musicians. Growing up, James started playing the mandolin at the age of 3. In 1933, he and his family formed the musical group “Sonny Loden and the Southerners”. Several radio stations, including WMSD-AM, KLCN and WSGN, provide them with programming on a daily basis. The group disbanded in 1950.

James moved to Nashville, Tennessee in 1951 and later signed with Capitol Records. His first hit, “Young Love,” was released in 1956. The song was a commercial success, selling over a million copies. He has appeared on a range of TV shows, including The Ed Sullivan Show and Hee Haw. In 1964, James joined the vocal group Southern Gentlemen, and two months later released the hit “You’re the Only World I Know”. He became a musical legend by releasing 16 consecutive Billboard #1 singles between 1967 and 1971, a feat unparalleled by other solo artists. James received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1961. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2006.
