Sofia Boutella is an Algerian-born hip-hop and street dancer. She is also an actress and model. Her film credits include StreetDance 2, Star Trek Beyond and The Mummy. Boutella was born on April 3, 1982 in Bab El Oued, Algiers. Her father, Safy Boutella, was a jazz musician and her mother was an architect. The family moved to France in 1992. Boutella completed her studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.

Boutella developed an interest in dancing at an early age. She started in classical dancing and switched to rhythmic gymnastics at the age of 10. She is also a member of the French national rhythmic gymnastics team. In 2006, Boutella won the Battle of the Year as part of the “Vagabond Crew” dance group. She has since appeared in music videos for Rihanna, Madonna, Usher and Ne-Yo. She starred in the posthumous video for Michael Jackson’s 2011 single “Hollywood Tonight.”

Boutella played “Eva” in the British dance drama film Street Dance 2 (2012). She played the supporting role of “Gazelle” in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015). The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Colin Firth and Samuel L Jackson. Boutella played the alien scavenger “Jaylah” in Star Trek: Beyond (2016). Her upcoming films include Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (2017) and Charlize Theron’s The Coldest City (2017).

A model, Boutella is known for appearing in Nike womenswear ad campaigns. She has also modeled for brands including Reebok, Puma and Adidas. She is currently signed to IMG Models.
