early life
Cordozar Calvin Broadus was born on October 20, 1971 in Long Beach, California. His parents Vernall and Beverly parted ways after Snoop was born three months later. His father is basically not in his life. His mother remarried. Because he liked the cartoon characters in “Peanuts” very much, his mother and stepfather nicknamed him “Snoopy”. He is the second child of his mother’s three sons. When he was very young, Snoop began to sing and play the piano at the Trinity Baptist Church in Calvary. In the sixth grade, he began to rap. As a child, Calvin sold sweets, delivered newspapers and bags of groceries to help his family make ends meet. Although his mother tried her best to get him to sing and play football in the choir, instead of gang beating and running in the street, he started the latter activity when he was a teenager. He is a member of the Rollin’ 20s Crips gang from the East Side of Long Beach. Soon after graduating from high school, he was arrested for possession of cocaine. In the next three years, often in and out of jail or prison.
Snoop and his cousins Nate Dogg and Lil’ 1/2 Dead and friend Warren G recorded homemade tapes. They called themselves 213 under the area code of Long Beach at the time. “Hold On”, an early freestyle solo song by Snoop was included in the mixtape and eventually fell into the hands of Dr. Dre. He was so impressed that he invited Snoop to audition and introduced him to The DOC, an NWA affiliate, which taught him how to construct lyrics and construct poems, hooks and choruses.
