Sinead Marie Bernadette O’Connor is an Irish rock singer and songwriter. She was born to parents Sean and Marie on 8 December 1966 in Glenageary, Dublin. She has four siblings, Eimear, John, Eoin and the novelist Joseph. O’Connor’s parents divorced when she was very young. She became a victim of child abuse by her mother. At fifteen, O’Connor was sent to a reform school for shoplifting. She later attended Newton School in Watford, but dropped out before graduating.

O’Connor began performing with the Ton Ton Macoute Band in 1984. Her early influences included artists such as David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Bob Marley. She was signed to Ensign Records and her debut album The Lion and the Cobra was released in November 1987. The album included the singles “Troy”, “Mandinka” and “I Want Your (Hands on Me)”. O’Connor shot to fame in 1990 with the release of her second album, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200, sold 7 million copies, and was nominated for four Grammys. The album featured Prince’s hit single “Nothing Compares 2 U”.
O’Connor’s other albums include “Am I Not Your Girl? (1992), “Faith and Courage (2000)” and more recently “How About I Am (And You Are You)?” (2012)” and “I’m not bossy, I’m the boss (2014).” O’Connor was also controversial, starting with her announcement of support for the IRA in 1989. In 1991, she boycotted the Grammys, She tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II on live television in 1992. O’Connor reportedly attempted suicide several times, the first in March 1999 and the most recent in November 2015.
