Simone Manuel is an American swimmer and Olympic gold medalist. She became the first African American woman to win an Olympic swimming gold medal. Manuel was born on August 2, 1996 in Houston, Texas, to his parents Mark and Sharon. She has two brothers, Ryan and Chris. Manuel attended Austin High School in Fort Bend County. She is currently studying at Stanford University, where she swims for the Stanford Cardinals women’s team.

Manuel was inspired to become a swimmer after watching her brothers participate in the summer league. She started training at the age of 4 and became a member of the first colonial swimming team at the age of 11. Under the leadership of coach Greg Meehan, Manuel continued her swimming career at Stanford University. She broke the NCAA 100-yard freestyle in her freshman year. She has also won NCAA championships many times.

In 2013, Manuel won her first team gold medal at the Barcelona World Swimming Championships. She won two silver medals and one bronze medal at the 2014 Pan Pacific Championships. She won the second gold medal in the 4×100m freestyle at the 2015 Kazan World Championships. Manuel made his Olympic debut at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. She won the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle and the silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay. The 100m gold medal was shared with Canadian player Penny Oleksiak, who also finished the race in 52.70 seconds.
