Simon Perez is an Israeli politician born in Poland. He was the 9th president of Israel. He has also served as prime minister for two terms. Peres was born on August 2, 1923 in Wignava, Poland, his original name is Szymon Perski. His parents are Sara and Yitzhak Perski. He has a younger brother named Geshun. Perez attended Geula Commercial High School, followed by Ben Shemen Agricultural School. He later attended the New School, New York University and Harvard University. Perez was appointed Director-General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense in 1953. He helped improve the country’s military strength by ensuring the safety of fighter jets, weapons, and nuclear energy. He also actively participated in the 1956 Suez Canal War. Peres began his political career in 1959 when he was elected to the Knesset as a member of the Mapai party. Later he represented the following political parties: Rafi Party, Alliance Party, Labour Party and Kadima Party. Perez served as Minister of Transportation from 1970 to 1974. He served as Minister of Defense for two terms from 1974 to 1977 and from 1995 to 1996. In 1994, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for the Oslo Agreement. The other recipients are Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat.
When Yitzhak Rabin stepped down in 1997, Perez served as acting prime minister for two months. He was officially elected as the 8th Prime Minister of Israel in 1984. He served a second term from 1995 to 1996. Peres succeeded Moshe Katsav as the 9th President of Israel. . Perez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in June 2012.
