Sidney Poitier is an actor and film director. He became the first African-American Oscar winner for Best Actor in 1964. He was born on February 20, 1927, in Miami, Florida, to Bahamian parents Evelyn and Reginald Poitier. He grew up on Cat Island in the Bahamas. As a teenager, he moved back to Miami, Florida, and later to New York City. Before acting, he served briefly in the U.S. Army.

Poitier joined African American theater and appeared in early productions such as “Our Youth,” “Lysisstrata,” and “Anna Lucasta.” He made his debut in the 1950 noir film No Way Out. Poitier played his breakthrough role “Gregory Miller” in the 1955 film Blackboard Jungle. In 1964, he won his first Oscar for the film Lily of the Field. Other notable films include “To Mr. Love”, “On a Hot Night” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”. In 1999, he was named the greatest male star in a Hollywood classic by the American Film Institute. In 2009, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.
