He and Bernard Kardon built the world’s first integrated high-fidelity receiver. The two founded Harman Kardon in 1953. The company manufactures home and car audio equipment. Books he has authored include People First, co-authored by Harman with Daniel Yanklovich. Harman was named undersecretary of commerce in the Carter administration. He took over in 1976 and sold the company to Beatrice Foods. Sidney left in 1978 to create Harman International Industries. By 1989, the company’s international sales had exceeded $500 million. He served for three years as the Principal of the Friends of the World Academy. Harman was named “2007 Entrepreneur of the Year” by the USC Lloyd Grave Center for Entrepreneurship. In 2010, he bought Newsweek for $1 and took on the company’s $47 million in debt. Sidney is married to Jane Harman.
