Shonda Rhimes is an American award-winning screenwriter, television producer and author. She is best known for the hit series Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, How to Get Away and Scandal. Her book Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand in the Sun and Be Your Own Person was published in 2015. Shonda Lynn Rhimes was born on January 13, 1970 in Chicago, Illinois. Her parents, Vera and Ilee Rhimes, Jr., are educators. She is the youngest of 6 children. Rhimes attended Marian Catholic High School, followed by Dartmouth College. In 1991 she received a BA in English Literature and Creative Writing. She received her master’s degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Before entering film school, Rhimes worked for the San Francisco advertising agency “McCann Erickson”. During her graduate studies, she interned at production company Mundy Lane Entertainment. In 1995, Rhimes served as research director for the documentary Hank Aaron: Chasing a Dream. Three years later, she produced and directed the short Blossoms and Veils (1998) starring Jada Pinkett-Smith and Jeffrey Wright. Rhimes co-wrote the HBO film, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge (1999), starring Halle Berry. Other early projects include Crossroads (2001) with Britney Spears and Princess Diaries 2 (2004) with Julie Andrews.

Rhimes is the creator and executive producer of the medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy. The show premiered on ABC on March 27, 2005. As of May 2017, 13 quarters have been completed. The main cast includes Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson. The spin-off “Private Practice” ran for six seasons from 2007 to 2013. Rhimes’ next big project for ABC is the political thriller Scandal. The show premiered on April 5, 2012, starring Kerry Washington as “Olivia Pope.” Rhimes followed up on the TV series How to Get Away with Murder (2014) starring Viola Davis. Other works include The Catch (2016-17) and For the People (2017).

Rhimes has received multiple awards, including 3 Emmys, 5 NAACP Image Awards, and 1 Golden Globe. In 2007, she was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 People Who Helped Shape the World.” Her production company “ShondaLand” was established in 2005. Rhimes signed a multi-year deal with Netflix on August 14, 2017. Her future work will be released as a Netflix original.
