early life
Shepard was born on April 22, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois. She is the daughter of LaVerne and Lawrence Shepherd. Her father was a deacon in the family church and also worked as a restaurant manager, while her mother cleaned the house. Shepherd is the eldest of the couple’s three daughters. She attended Hoffman High School.

While working as a legal secretary in Beverly Hills, Shepherd began performing stand-up comedy. When she starred in the short-lived sitcom Clayhorn! The show aired for one season on the WB Network in 1995. Due to the cancellation of the show, Shepherd ran into financial difficulties and had to live with a friend for a year while she was looking for more work.
In 1996, she starred in Jaime Foxx’s sitcom “The Jaime Foxx Show,” where she acted until 2001. She also landed recurring roles in “Sudden Susan” and “Everybody Loves Raymond” in the late 1990s. During this time, she also played the character Ramona Platt in “Imperfect” from 2002 to 2006. She joined the cast of “Family War” in 2005 and had recurring roles on the sitcom until 2009, when the popular comedy “30 Rock” cast Shepherd as a recurring role from 2007 to 2013.

In 2009, Shepherd launched his own show “Sherri”. The show premiered and aired for one season on Lifetime Television. In 2013, she appeared as a recurring character in the final season of How I Met Your Mother. In 2013, she also starred in the Broadway musical Cinderella. From 2017 to 2018, she starred in the NBC mock legal comedy series Trial and Error.
Shepherd has also made a name for herself outside of TV sitcoms. She has hosted or appeared on numerous games and reality shows, including “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”, “Rachel Ray” and “Tell the Truth”. She’s generally popular, though, and has returned to guest hosting several times since her official departure.

Sheppard married Jeff Tapley in 2001. The couple had a son in 2005 but divorced in 2009. She then started dating author Lamar Sally, and the two got engaged in December 2010. The pair got married in August 2011, but then separated in May 2014. However, the couple did welcome a son through surrogacy in August 2014.
Shepherd has type 2 diabetes. In 2013, she co-authored a book called “Plan D: How to Lose Weight and Beat Diabetes.” Although she was a former Jehovah’s Witness, she became an evangelical Christian.
