Sharon Jones is a Grammy nominated American singer and lead singer of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. She was born to parents Ella and Charlie Jones on May 5, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia. She has five siblings, Dora, Isaiah, Henry Jones, Willa and Charles. Jones grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. She continued her education at Brooklyn College.

Jones started singing in her local church choir. She participated in talent shows and provided backing vocals for a local funk band. She later served as a corrections officer and armored vehicle guard. Jones joined Gabriel Roth and Dap-Kings in 1996 as backup singer. Her first single as lead singer was “Dam It’s Hot”. This song was produced by Desco Records.
The album, Dap Dippin’ with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, was released in 2002. It marked the first full-length album released by Daptone Records. The group subsequently released the albums Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007) and I Learned the Hard Way (2010). Jones’ sixth album, Give the People What They Want, was released in January 2014. It peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Jones had a role in Denzel Washington and Forest Whitaker’s film The Great Debater (2007). She is part of the 2015 documentary Miss Sharon Jones! “The protagonist.
