early life
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977 in Barranquilla, Colombia. The name Shakira is in Arabic, to express gratitude. She is the only child of William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado. Her grandparents immigrated from Lebanon to New York City, where her father was born. When Shakira’s father was five years old, he immigrated to Colombia. She is Spanish (Catalan and Castilian) and her mother’s Italian. She grew up in the Roman Catholic Church and attended a Catholic school. She has 8 older half-brothers and sisters from her father’s previous marriage. Shakira spent most of her childhood in Barranquilla, a city on the Caribbean coast of northern Colombia. She wrote her first poem “Crystal Rose” when she was four years old. When she grew up, she was fascinated by watching her father write stories on his typewriter and asked for a story at Christmas. She got one at the age of seven and has been writing poetry ever since. These poems eventually evolved into songs.
When Shakira was four years old, her father took her to a Middle Eastern restaurant where she first heard doumbek, a traditional drum used in Arabic music, usually accompanied by belly dancing. She started dancing on the table, and over the years, learning belly dancing, realized that she wanted to be a performer. She is called “Belly Dance Girl” at school because she will show her new dance steps to her classmates every Friday. She likes to sing for her classmates and teachers at her school.
