Sergey Kislyak is a Russian diplomat who is currently the Russian ambassador to the United States. He was the Russian ambassador to Belgium. Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak was born on September 7, 1950. He is fluent in English and French. Both his parents are from Ukraine. Kislyak studied at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) in Moscow, Russia. He continued his studies at the Soviet Institute of Foreign Trade, graduating in 1977.

Kislyak joined the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977. From 1981 to 1985, he was the Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Soviet Union to the United Nations in New York. In 1985, he was the first secretary and counselor of the Soviet embassy and established a trade union in Washington, D.C. He held this position until 1989. Kislyak was Deputy Director of the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1991. He previously worked in the International Organizations Division.

Kislyak held key positions in the Russian Foreign Ministry from 1991 to 1998. He was appointed by President Boris Yeltsin in 1998 as Russian ambassador to Belgium. He held this position from February 1998 to May 2003. During his tenure, he also served as the Russian ambassador to Belgium. Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to NATO. Kislyak was Deputy Foreign Minister from 2003 to 2008. He was elected by then-President Medvedev as Russia’s ambassador to the United States. He was sworn in on July 26, 2008. He is currently serving under President Vladimir Putin.

Kislyak is at the center of a controversy involving Attorney General Jeff Sessions and former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn. The latter resigned as a result. Kislyak attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2017. He reportedly met with Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner in December 2016.
