Shaun Ellis was born in Anderson, South Carolina in 1977, earning the nickname Big Katt, and played college football at the University of Tennessee. As a Vol, Ellis tallied more than 100 tackles, 12.5 sacks, three forced turnovers and one interception.
He entered the 2000 NFL draft, and the New York Jets selected him with the 12th overall pick. Ellis entered the starting rotation as a rookie and made his presence felt. He finished his rookie season with 8.5 sacks, the second-most sacks by a first-year player in Jets history. Ellis played with the Jets until 2010 and was a two Pro Bowl selection, once in 2003 and once in 2009. He is the recipient of the 2010 Ed Block Courage Award. He signed a free agent contract with the New England Patriots in 2011 and appeared in 14 games. Ellis appeared in the only Super Bowl of his career with the Patriots in Super Bowl 46, which then lost to the New York Giants. After being released from prison, Ellis announced his retirement in 2012. He finished his career with 566 tackles, 73.5 sacks, 16 defensive passes, 13 forced turnovers and 1 interception.
