Scott McNealy was born November 13, 1954 in Columbus, Indiana, and grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He is best known as a co-founder of technology giant Sun Microsystems. He attended Harvard University with an undergraduate degree in economics and then an MBA from Stanford University. After graduating from Stanford University, McNealy worked as a director of manufacturing at a company called Onyx Systems. In 1982, a Stanford graduate named Vinod Khosla approached Scott, still at Onyx, to help start and direct a small technology business called Sun Microsystems. The “SUN” in the name actually refers to the “Stanford University Network” computer workstation that Vinod co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim developed when they were graduate students. The company was profitable in its first year. McNealy became Sun’s CEO in 1984, succeeding Khosla. He would remain CEO for the next 22 years, stepping down in 2006. The company had its initial public offering in 1986 under the ticker symbol “SUNW”, which was changed to “JAVA” in 2007.
