Sarah Palin is an American politician, reality TV star and former governor of Alaska. She was born on February 11, 1964 in Sandpoint, Idaho, but she grew up in Alaska. She attended Wasilla High School and played on the girls’ basketball team. In 1984, she was crowned “Miss Wasilla” and placed in the top three in the Miss Alaska pageant. She received her undergraduate degree in Communication from the University of Idaho in 1987.

Palin worked as a sports commentator and reporter before starting her political career. She won a seat on the Wasilla City Council in 1992 and was elected mayor in 1996. As mayor, she opposed tax hikes and helped cut property taxes. From 2003-2004, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
Palin became the ninth governor of Alaska on December 4, 2006. She became the youngest and first female governor to serve in Alaska. In 2008, she was selected by John McCain to be his vice presidential running mate. Palin returned to his hometown of Alaska after losing the 2008 presidential election. She retired as governor on July 3, 2009, after ethics charges were brought against her.
