Samuel Irving “Si” Newhouse, Jr. was born in New York City in November 1927. Si Newhouse is the son of Samuel Irving Newhouse, Sr., who founded Advance Publications in 1909. Si attended the Horace Mann School in New York City. At the time of his death, Si and his brother Donald owned Advanced Publications. The company owns Bright House Networks and has a controlling interest in Discovery Communications. During his lifetime, Si was one of the 50th wealthiest Americans and one of New York’s wealthiest residents. Si is known for his philanthropy, and one of his most notable donations was his $15 million to Syracuse University. At one point, he owned a Jackson Pollock painting, one of the most valuable paintings in the world. He married Jane Victoria Newhouse in 1973 and was previously married to Jane Frank.
