Sam Shepard is an Oscar-nominated American actor and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. He is also a screenwriter, director and writer. His credits include the plays Buried Children (1979), The Curse of the Hungry Class (1978) and the film The Right Stuff (1983). Shepard was born Samuel Shepard Rogers III on November 5, 1943 in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. His father, Samuel Shepard Rogers, Jr., was a farmer and military officer. His mother, Jane Elaine Rogers, was a teacher. He has two younger sisters, Sandy and Roxanne. Shepard attended Duarte High School in California. He studied agriculture at Mount San Antonio College, but never completed his degree.

Shepard began acting and writing screenplays as early as high school. In the early 1960s, he dropped out of college and joined the touring theatre company “The Bishops’ Conference”. He worked with the band for about two years before moving to New York City in 1963. Shepard’s first two plays, “Cowboy” and “Rock Garden,” came out in 1964. He won an Obie Award for plays Chicago (1965), Icarus’ Mother (1965), Red Cross (1966), La Turista (1967), Forensics and Navigator (1968) and melodrama play (1968). Shepard worked with musician Bob Dylan on 1975’s Rolling Thunder Revue. The two wrote the film, Renaldo and Clara (1978). Sheppard won the 1979 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play “The Buried Child.” The 1996 Broadway production was also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. Other plays include True West (1980), Heart Lies (1985), Simpatico (1993), God of Hell (2004) and Kick the Dead Horse (2007).
Shepard played “The Farmer” in the romantic drama “Days of Heaven” (1978). The film is directed by Terrence Malik and stars Richard Gere and Brooke Adams. He went on to play major roles in films such as Resurrection (1980) and Francis (1982). Shepard was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as “Chuck Yeager” in The Right Stuff (1983). He appeared in Steel Magnolias (1989) with Sally Field and Dolly Parton. His film credits also include The Pelican Brief (1993) with Julia Roberts, Black Hawk Down (2001) with Josh Hartnett and Mud (2013) with Matthew McConaughey. In 1999, Shepard was nominated for an Emmy for his role as “Dashiell Hammett” in the TV movie Dash and Lilly. He played the role of “Robert Rayburn” repeatedly in the Netflix series Bloodlines (2015-17).
Shepard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1986. He was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 1994. He was presented with the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award as a master American dramatist in 2009.
