Salvador Sanchez Salem was born on June 18, 1944 in Quezaltepeque, La Libertad, El Salvador. Since 2014, he has been President of El Salvador. He was Vice President of El Salvador (2009-14).
In the 2014 presidential election, he ran as a candidate for the left-wing Farabendo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN). His prior political standings were such positions as being elected as a deputy for the FMLN in the Legislative Assembly (2002) and re-elected in 2003 and 2006; from 2001 to 2004 he served as the party’s general coordinator; in 2006, Following the death of El Salvador communist leader and FMLN commander Shafiq Handal, he succeeded Handal as head of the FMLN legislative branch. In April 2007, he was selected as Mauricio Funes’ running mate in the 2009 presidential election. Funes and Sánchez Cerén defeated the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA). His political ideology is rooted in the various democratic and revolutionary organizations to which he belongs. Salem is a member of PRAM (Partido Revolicionario Abril y Mayo), a party opposed to dictatorship and advocates anti-imperialistism. He then joined (UDN) Union Democratica Nacionalista and PAR (Partido Accion Renovadora). As a member of UDN, he is also a participant in the (UNO) Union Nacional Oppositora. He is an active member of ANDES 21 de Junio, a union of teachers who practice and believe in the ideas of Paulo Freire and his analysis of teaching. In the 70s he joined the Fuerzas Populares de Liberación “Farabundo Martí” (FPL), one of five left-wing organisations with different Marxist-Leninist tendencies, which later merged to form Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN).
