Sally Yates is an American attorney and a former acting US Attorney General. She served as Deputy Attorney General under President Barack Obama and held a brief position under President Donald Trump. Yates was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on August 20, 1960, under the original name of Sally Caroline Quillian (Sally Caroline Quillian). Her parents are Xara and Kelly Quillian. She has an older sister named Terrell. Yates received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia in 1982. She graduated with honors from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1986 with a doctorate in law. She is the executive editor of the Georgia Law Review.

Yates started her legal career at the King & Spalding law firm in Atlanta. From 1985 to 1989, she was engaged in commercial litigation business there. In 1989, she was hired as an assistant attorney for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia. In 1994, Yates was appointed as the head of the Fraud and Public Corruption Department. She was promoted to the first position as Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2002 and later as Acting U.S. Attorney. Yates was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2010 as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia. She held this position from March 2010 to January 2015.

Yates was confirmed as the Deputy Attorney General of the United States on May 13, 2015. She served under the 83rd Attorney General Loretta Lynch. During her tenure, Yates focused on the day-to-day operations of the Justice Department. This includes four law enforcement agencies. Yates served as the Acting U.S. Attorney General of the Trump Administration from January 20, 2017 until her termination on January 30, 2017. She was fired by President Donald Trump because she refused to defend Trump’s immigration-related executive order. She was replaced by Dana J. Boente, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
