Carlos St. John Phillips was born on August 26, 1986 in Brooklyn, New York. He is 1 of 9 children. Most of his childhood was spent between Brooklyn, New York and his mom and Georgetown, Guyana and his dad. Having said that, St. John was mainly raised by his mother, a missionary. When he grew up, he looked up to his brother like a father and tried to imitate his every move. He admitted to XXL that if his brother is a fisherman or a policeman, he still wants to be like him. St. John grew up listening to reggae/ballroom music. In fact, the first live performance he participated in was a performance of the Bini and Super Cat from Jamaica. After entering hip-hop/rap, he was captured by Jay-Z’s fourth album Vol. 3… The life and times of S. Carter (1999). However, St. John’s biggest inspiration is to watch his brother’s rap/performance. He even admitted to rap at his brother’s bar when he was still in junior high school. Carlos St. John wrote his first original packaging during his stay in Guyana. In March 2010, he abandoned his first project The St. John Portfolio. A few months later, he released the mixing tape In Association (2010).
After his first project, St. John attracted the attention of music director Zach Katz. He was quickly airlifted to Los Angeles, California, to write songs for BMG artists. Most notably, he spent 2 months writing for Rihanna, but none of his tracks were included. After returning to Brooklyn, St. John co-wrote “No Interruption” for Hoodie Allen’s album All American (2012). He co-wrote the songs “Crash” and “Rivals” for Usher’s 8th album Hard II Love (2016). Other songwriting works include “The Chief” by Jidenna, “Can’t Wait” by dvsn and “Bad Thing” by Kiesza.
In 2016, St. John began to release music under his current nickname “SAINt JHN”. His first single was titled “1999”. Support videos have been viewed more than 800,000 times on YouTube. He followed up with the tracks “Reflection” and “Rose”. To end 2016, SAINT JHN opened for rapper Post Malone at the West Coast Station of his Hollywood Dream Tour. He is the guest writer for Jidenna’s song “Helicopters / Beware” on the album The Chief (2017). 2017 also ushered in the songs “3 Beyond” and “Hermes Freeystyle”.
SAINt JHN’s first studio album Collection One was released in March 2018. It includes new songs such as “I heard you were too much last night”, “selfish” and “Lust” with Janelle Kroll. SAINt JHN currently has established partnerships with his Godd Complexx and LA Reid’s Hitco Records. He also signed a management agreement with Kareem “Biggs” Burke. Biggs is a music veteran who has worked with Roc-A-Fella artists Jay-z and Dame Dash. SAINt JHN’s second album, Ghetto Lenny’s Love Songs, was released in August 2019. It is ranked 39th on the Billboard 200 and 41st on the Canadian Albums Chart.
