Saddam Hussein was the Iraqi dictator and Iraq’s fifth president. He was born on April 28, 1937 in the town of Al-Awja near Tikrit. His biological parents are Hussein and Suba. Hussein was raised in Baghdad by his uncle Khairallah Talfah. Talfa is a Sunni Muslim and Arab nationalist. Hussein attended al-Karh Secondary School in Baghdad. He later studied law at Cairo University in Cairo, Egypt.
Profession
Hussein joined the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party in 1957. He attempted to assassinate then Iraqi President Abdul Karim Qassem on October 7, 1959. The assassination failed and he fled to Syria. Hussein returned to Iraq in 1963, but was arrested shortly after. Despite being imprisoned, he was named Deputy Regional Commander in 1966. Hussein led a successful Ba’athist coup in 1968 that led to the appointment of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr as Iraqi president. Hussein served as al-Bakr’s vice president, during which time he was able to nationalize oil and other industries.
Hussein became President of Iraq on July 16, 1979, a position he held until April 9, 2003. He remained in power during the Iran-Iraq War and the Gulf War. Thousands of Iraqis were killed under his rule, including the 1982 massacre of 148 Shiite Muslims in Dujaer. Hussein is suspected of possessing weapons of mass destruction and having ties to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda. As a result, Iraq was invaded by the US-led coalition in 2003. The Baath Party was dissolved and elections were held to replace it.
