Russell Simmons is an American entrepreneur, record producer, writer and activist. He is best known as the co-founder of Def Jam Recordings. His companies include Phat Farm, Argyleculture, Global Grind, Tantris. He is the chairman and chief executive officer of Rush Communications. Russell Wendell Simmons was born on October 4, 1957 in Queens, New York. His father Daniel is a teacher, and his mother Evelyn is an artist. He has two brothers, Daniel Jr. and Joseph (Rev Run). Simmons graduated from August Martin High School. He majored in sociology at the City College of New York, but never completed his degree. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Claremont Lincoln University.

Before the success of his music career, Simmons belonged to the street gang “Seven Immortals.” After one of the members was murdered, he withdrew from the gang. In 1977, after hearing MC Eddie Cheeba’s performance, he was attracted by the music industry. Simmons created Rush Management and signed his DJ/MC friend Curtis Walker (Kurtis Blow). Their first single “Christmas Rappin” was released in December 1979 and sold more than 500,000 copies. He co-produced “It’s Like That/Sucker MCs” for Run-DMC. He also helped Run-DMC sign a record contract with Profile Records.
In 1984, Simmons and Rick Rubin co-founded the record company Def Jam Recordings. The label is located in New York City and is distributed by Universal Music Group. In 1996, Rubin sold his stake in Def Jam to UMG for $120 million. The early success of the label was related to actions such as Public Enemy, LL Cool J and Beastie Boys. Simmons co-produced the movie Kushgrove (1985) with Michael Schultz and George Jackson. He collaborated with Eddie Murphy to produce “Professor Nuts” (1996). He also produced the HBO series Def Comedy Jam (1992-97) and Def Poetry Jam (2002-07). Simmons currently serves as the chairman and chief executive officer of Rush Communications Inc. He runs the “Phat Fashions” and “Global Grind” companies. His portfolio also includes Def Pictures, Rush Books, Tantris, Argyleculture and All Def Digital.
Simmons has written several books, including Life and Def: Sex, Drugs, Money, + God (2002), Super Rich: Inside and Out (2011), Success through Stillness (2014), and The Happy Vegan (2015). He is also known for his work as an activist and philanthropist. He won the 2001 PETA Humanitarian Award and the 2011 PETA Person of the Year Award. He was appointed as the Chairman of the National Understanding Foundation in 2002, and was appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Slavery Monument in 2009.
