As the founder of Russia’s leading premium liquor brand, Standard Vodka, Mr. Tariko is one of the richest men in Russia today. He was born Roustam Vasilyevich Tariko on March 17, 1962 in Menzelinsk, Tatarstan, Russia, and moved to the country’s capital, Moscow, at the age of 17.
After graduating from the Economics Department of the Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineering in 1989, Tariko went on to earn an MBA at INSEAD, France. But it was during the economic reforms of the 1980s that he made his first money, mostly by helping foreigners find rooms in Moscow hotels. Next, he started working as a consultant for Italian confectioner Ferrero Rocher, before switching to selling Italian absinthe. This resulted in winning an exclusive contract with Martini & Rossi. In 1998 founded Russia’s first premium vodka brand, Russian Standard. Later, in 1999, he joined with McKinsey & Company to form a bank called Standard Bank of Russia, a pioneering credit and term life insurance company. Having witnessed significant growth over the years, the bank entered into an exclusive partnership with American Express in 2012. Also known for its strategic investments, Roustam Tariko has acquired a 9.9% stake in Poland’s CEDC, one of the world’s largest vodka producers, and a 70% stake in Italian sparkling wine and absinthe maker Gancia. In 2012, his stake in Chongqing CEDC increased to 19.5%. Tariko has three children, including twin girls and Roustam Jr.
