Ronald Joyce, known as the “King of Donuts,” teamed up with former NHL player Tim Horton to create Tim Hortons in 1964 ) fast food and doughnut chain. A former police officer, Joyce met his future partner when he was patrolling the Houghton Donut Shop while stopping by Tim in the early 1960s.
By 1967 he was an official partner of Houghton as he opened two more restaurants of the same name. After Tim Horton’s tragic death in 1974, Joyce bought out his partner’s shares and became the sole owner. He ran the company successfully until he sold it to Wendy’s in 1995 for $600 million. But after the acquisition, he became the fast-food chain’s largest shareholder, acquiring more than 16 million shares. By 2003, he had freed himself from all of Wendy’s stocks and, as a result of his portfolio diversification, bought stocks of well-known Canadian companies and industries that generate substantial dividend income. Today, he owns an aircraft leasing company and the Fox Harb’r Golf Resort on Nova Scotia’s North Shore. In addition, he is the Honorary President of the Tim Hortons Children’s Fund.
