At the age of three, he received a $25 war bond for signing an autograph in a spiritual contest at the United Baptist Church. At the age of seven, he signed with Dinah Washington and other celebrities at venues such as the Regal Theater in Chicago, Illinois. During his teenage years, he often sang on church tours with his brother.
