In 1947, Southern graduated from the University of Alberta with a bachelor of medicine degree and decided to start his own business when he and his father each put $2,000 into the original Alberta trailer rental company, which later became ATCO. First, the pair purchased 15 utility trailers and rented them out in the Calgary area, before they began importing and selling mobile homes in the United States. In the 1970s, the father-son duo expanded into oil and gas, and a decade later, they also ventured into power. Today, the company is interested in various companies active in the structural and logistics, energy, utilities and technology industries. In a 48-year career as CEO, Ronald Southern also served as Chairman of ATCO Ltd. and Canadian Utilities until 2012. Currently, his daughter Nancy serves as ATCO’s President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman.
