Ron Glass is an American film and television actor. He is best known for his roles in “Ron Harris” on the sitcom Barney Miller and “The Shepherd Book” on the Firefly series. Glass was born Ronald E. Glass on July 10, 1945, in Evansville, Indiana. His parents are Lycia and Crump. Glass attended St. Francis Theological Seminary and then the University of Evansville. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Drama and Literature. In 1980, the University of Evansville awarded him the Medal of Honor.
Profession
Glass started his career as a stage actor before moving to Hollywood. His television debut was an episode of the 1972 NBC series “The Sanfords”. Other early TV shows include Family Portrait, The Hawaiian Five, The Bob Newhart Show and Good Times. Glass made his feature film debut as “Quintus” in The Crazy World of Julius Vrooder (1974). The film was produced by Hugh Hefner and directed by Arthur Shearer.
In 1975, Glass played detective “Ron Harris” on the ABC sitcom “Barney Miller.” The show ran for eight seasons from January 1975 to May 1982. Glass’ performance earned him an NAACP Image Award nomination in 1979 and a Primetime Emmy nomination in 1982. He starred in the series “Fantastic Couple” (1982-83) with Demond Wilson. The show was canceled after the first season.
Glass had key roles in the R&B (1992-93), Mr. Rhodes (1996-97), Young Angels (1997-98) and Firefly (2002-03) series. He voices the character “Randy Carmichael” in the animated series “Growing Up”! (2004-08). Glass reprised her role as The Shepherd’s Book in the space western film Serenity (2005). His film credits also include Lakeview Terrace (2008) with Samuel L. Jackson, Death at a Funeral (2010) with Loretta Devine and Strange Frame (2012) with Tim Curry.
