Roger Smith is an American actor, screenwriter and former singer. He played “Jeff Spencer” in 77 Sunset Boulevard and “Douglas Roberts” in Mr. Roberts. His film credits include The Man with a Thousand Faces (1957) and Aunt Mam (1958). Roger LaVerne Smith was born on December 18, 1932 in Southgate, California. His parents are Dallas and Lionel Smith. He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Smith attended dance/singing classes at the age of 6. He is also an avid footballer due to his height and physique. Smith spent two years in the Navy Reserve before acting. During his tenure, he trained troops around the clock with the Pacific Fleet based in Honolulu, Hawaii. Encouraged and inspired by actor James Cagney, Smith started the show. His early film credits include No Time to Be Young (1957) and Operation Crazy Ball (1957). He played the supporting role of “Crighton Chaney” in the film The Man with a Thousand Faces (1957). He later played the author “Patrick Dennis” in “Auntie Mame” (1958) starring Rosalind Russell.
Smith worked briefly at Columbia Pictures before moving to Warner Bros. in 1959. He played “Jeff Spencer” in the private detective series 77 Sunset Boulevard. The show ran on ABC from October 1958 to February 1964. Smith left the series in 1962 due to health problems. His next big role was “Lt. Douglas Roberts” on the NBC sitcom “Mr. Roberts” (1965-66). The show was canceled after one season due to poor ratings. Smith’s TV Credits also include Ford Television Theater, Dad Knows Best, and The Hawaiian Eye. After retirement, he served as manager of his second wife.

Roger Smith passed away on June 4, 2017 at the age of 84. His official cause of death was complications of Parkinson’s disease. He also battled the neurological disease myasthenia gravis for several years. Smith was married to Australian actress “Victoria Shaw” from 1956 to 1965. They have three children, Tracy, Jordan and Dallas. He married his second wife, actress/singer “Ann Margaret Olsen” in May 1967. Their union lasted 50 years until his death in 2017.
