Robert Vaughn is an American television, film and stage actor. He played “Napoleon Solo” in the 1960s hit series “Uncle.” Robert Francis Vaughan was born on November 22, 1932 in New York City. His mother, Marcella Frances, was a stage actress, and his father, Gerald Walter Vaughn, was a radio actor. He has no siblings. Vaughan spent his childhood with his grandparents in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He attended North High School and then the University of Minnesota. Vaughan earned a BA in Drama from Los Angeles City College and a MA from California State University, Los Angeles. In 1970, he received his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Southern California.

Vaughan landed his first television role in the 1955 series Medic. He played an unknown character “Spearman” in the 1956 biblical epic film “The Ten Commandments.” Vaughan played “Bob Ford” in the western “Hell’s Crossing” (1957). Other early films included No Time to Be Young (1957), Teenage Caveman (1958), and Unwed Mother (1958). Vaughan’s career was put on hold after being drafted into the U.S. Army. He briefly served as a sergeant major.
Vaughan had a supporting role in “Young Phillies” (1959) starring Paul Newman and Barbara Rush. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Vaughan co-starred in “Gunman Lee” in the western film The Magnificent Seven (1960). The film is a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic The Seven Samurai. Vaughan played “Napoleon Solo” in the NBC spy novel series “Uncle’s Man,” which ran from September 1964 to January 1968 in 105 episodes.
Vaughan starred alongside Steve McQueen in the dramatic thriller Bullitt (1968). In 1977, he won an Emmy for his supporting role in the ABC series “Washington: Behind the Scenes.” Vaughan’s film credits also include Remagen Bridge (1969) with George Siegel, Devil’s Seed (1977) with Julie Christie and Superman III (1983) with Christopher Reeve. He repeated the role of “Albert Stroller” on the series Hustle (2004-12) and hosted the comedy series Danger Theatre (1993). Vaughan’s star was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1998.
