early life
Robert Anthony Rodriguez was born on June 20, 1968 in San Antonio, Texas. Mother is a nurse and father is a salesman. He is Mexican-American and has nine brothers and sisters. His interest in movies began when he was 11 years old when he came into contact with cameras purchased by his date. He attended Saint Anthony High School Seminary, a small Catholic high school, commissioned to shoot football games, but they would not let him stay for too long. Rodriguez did not just videotape the game, but used an artistic way to capture the reaction of his parents, close-up shots of the players and shots of the ball moving in the air. After graduating from high school, he received a scholarship from the University of Texas at Austin and decided to study.
University of Texas and early career
During his time at UT Austin, he became interested in cartoons and wanted to do something to let everyone know his name. He founded a daily comic strip called “Los Hooligans”, which was published in university newspapers for three years. He believes that the experience of making comic strips taught him creative discipline and how to operate before the deadline.
At school, he was admitted into the film program after he received attention for participating in the local film completion.
In 1990, he produced a 16mm comedy short film “Bedside”. His friends and family are both actors and crew. The popularity of this film cemented his career as a film and director. It won five short film competitions, and he used the prize money to fund his next adventure.
In 1991, he left university to go to Coahuila, Mexico to shoot his next film “Mariachi”. He also participated in experimental drug trials to save the movie budget, which ended up being only $7,000.
