Born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia in 1923, Robert Kuok was one of three children who learned to speak Fuzhou, English and Japanese while Malaya was occupied by Japan. He studied at Raffles Institution and Johor Bahru English College. Robert Kuok made his fortune in the sugar industry, but his career began in the corporate world working in the rice industry. He founded Kuok Brothers Sdn Bhd with his family in the late 1940s to engage in agricultural trading. Ten years later, the Malayan Sugar Corporation was born and cooperated with the Japanese. Soon Kuok had a monopoly on sugar production in Malaysia, controlling about 80% of the market in the early 1960s. Ten years later, Robert Kuok started his foray into the hospitality industry, developing the first Shangri-La hotel in Singapore, before moving to Hong Kong. Kuok does business with several countries, including Indonesia, Fiji, Australia and the Philippines. He has expanded into several different industries including flour milling, animal feed, petroleum, trading and publishing. In 2012, Robert Kuok was reported to be the richest man in Malaysia. He was married twice and had eight children and several grandchildren. Many of his sons are involved in his business activities. Mr. Kwok currently lives in Hong Kong.
Net Worth Details: Robert Kuok is believed to own 100% of the Kerry Group, Robert Kuok and the Kuok Brothers. He also owns 51% of PPB Group. In 2009, the group sold its sugar investments to Felda Global Ventures for $380 million.
