Early life and college career
Robert Griffin III was born in Okinawa, Japan in 1990, where his U.S. Army sergeant parents, Jacqueline and Robert Jr., were stationed. The family later moved to Tacoma, Washington, then to New Orleans, Louisiana, before settling in Corporas Bay, Texas. There, Griffin went to Corpus Bay High School, where he became a triathlon star in football, basketball and track and field. In his junior football season, he threw for 2,001 yards and 25 touchdowns and earned All-District 16-4A first-team honors. On the track, Griffin broke state records in the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles.
Griffin graduated from high school a semester early and started attending Baylor University at the age of 17. As a member of the track team, he finished first in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Meanwhile, as a freshman footballer, he started 11 of 12 games and earned Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors. Griffin’s final season at Baylor was his best; he led the Bears to a 10-3 record and eventually won the Heisman Trophy, making him the first player at Baylor to do so. Griffin graduated in 2011 with a BA in Political Science.
Washington Redskins
Griffin was selected by the Washington Redskins with the second overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. He was an immediate success in his debut as the starting quarterback, opening with 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns. As such, he was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week and NFL Rookie of the Week. More success came in November, when Griffin passed for 200 yards with four touchdowns and then rushed for 84 yards. However, his season took a brief hit the following month when he suffered a Division 1 LCL sprain against the Ravens. Later, he was injured again in a wild-card loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Griffin eventually underwent surgery to repair his LCL and ACL. Despite the setback, Griffin set a record for the highest passing score by a rookie quarterback at 102.4. Additionally, he helped the Redskins reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
Griffin had a rough season in 2013, failing to repeat the success of the previous year. He finished the season with 3,203 passing yards and 16 passing touchdowns. The following season faced more challenges, with Griffin being ejected in Week 2 with a dislocated left ankle. He returned in Week 9 but lost three straight games with the Redskins. Griffin bounced back late in the season. In his final game of the year, he threw for a season-high 336 yards. Griffin’s final year with the Redskins brought more injuries as he suffered a concussion in Week 2 of the preseason. Griffin signed a two-year contract with the Cleveland Browns in 2016. However, after the team’s season opener, he was placed on the injured reserve due to a shoulder injury. He was activated before Week 14 and played in five games, during which he completed 87 of 147 passes for 886 yards and two touchdowns. In March 2017, Griffin was released by the Browns.
After remaining a free agent in 2017, Griffin signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens in 2018; he then re-signed to a two-year deal the following year.
