Robert John Downey Jr. is an American actor best known for his superhero roles in Marvel movies. He was born on April 4, 1965 in Manhattan, New York. His father, Robert Downey Sr., was an actor and filmmaker, and his mother, Elsie Ford, was an actress. His older sister Alison is also acting. Downey grew up in Greenwich Village. In 1978, shortly after his parents divorced, he moved to California. He attended Santa Monica High School but dropped out before completing his diploma.

Downey made his debut at the age of five. He played the role of a puppy in the 1970 film “Pound,” directed by his father. Other early film appearances include Baby It’s You (1983), Tuff Turf (1985) and Weird Science (1985). From 1985 to 1986, he was an actor on 18 episodes of Saturday Night Live. He then starred as “Jack Jericho” in the 1987 romantic comedy “Hit Up On The Artist.” He starred alongside Andrew McCarthy and Jamie Gartz in the 1987 TV series Less than Zero. Downey played British comedian “Charlie Chaplin” in the 1992 biopic “Chaplin.” His performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
In 2000, Downey played “Larry Paul” on the television series Ally McBeal. From 2000 to 2002, he starred in 25 episodes and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2001. Later, he starred in films, The Singing Detective (2003), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) and Tropical Thunder (2008). Downey played the memorable role of “Tony Stark” aka “Iron Man” in the 2008 superhero film “Iron Man.” He has since reprised the role of Iron Man in the remaining Marvel movies.
