Robert Mueller is an American lawyer and a member of the Republican Party. From 2001 to 2013, he served as the sixth director of the FBI. In 2017, he was appointed as the special prosecutor investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Robert Swan Mueller III was born on August 7, 1944 in Manhattan, New York. His parents are Alice C. Truesdale and Robert Swan Mueller, Jr. He has four sisters, Susan, Sandra, Joan and Patricia. Mueller grew up in Philadelphia and attended St. Paul School in Concord, New Hampshire. He is the captain of the school football team, hockey team and lacrosse team. In 1962, he was called their top athlete. Mueller received a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University (1966) and a master’s degree from New York University (1967). He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1973. He also served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Mueller started his legal career in 1973. From 1973 to 1976, he worked as a litigation lawyer in the “Pillsbury, Madison and Sutro” firm. He then joined the Northern California area as an assistant U.S. Attorney. In 1981, he was promoted to the head of the criminal department. In 1982, Mueller moved east to Boston and joined the Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office. He has served as an attorney in the area for one year since 1986. Mueller served as Assistant Attorney General of the United States Criminal Division from 1990 to 1993. He served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California from 1998 to 2001. He also served briefly as acting deputy attorney general during the Bush administration.
In July 2001, Mueller was nominated by President George W. Bush for the post of Director of the FBI. His nomination was unanimously approved and he was sworn in on September 4, 2001. The title of Director of the FBI was previously held by Louis Freeh. Mueller served as Director of the FBI for a total of 12 years. In 2011, President Obama extended his term of office by two years. In 2013, James Comey succeeded him. Mueller worked as a consulting professor at Stanford University for a year. He joined the law firm “WilmerHale” in 2014 as a partner. In May 2017, Mueller was appointed as a special counsel to the U.S. Department of Justice. He is responsible for overseeing investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. This also includes any possible connections between Russia and President Donald Trump’s associates.
