Born in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1950, Robbie Coltrane studied and played rugby at Glenalmond College before attending Glasgow School of Art and Moray House School of Education.

Coltrane first started acting in his 20s, appearing in “The Comic Strip Presents”, “A Kick Up the Eighties”, “Alfresco” and “Laugh??? I Nearly Paid a License Fee”. In the early 1980s, he began to dabble in movies, appearing in “The Flash”, “Krull”, “Kingdom Rush”, “Absolute Beginner”, “Mona Lisa” and “Fruit Machine”. In 1987, he played the role of Samuel Johnson in “Black Sir” and later in 1993’s “Boswell and Johnson’s Journey to the Western Isles” in the same role. In the 1990s, Coltrane played Dr. Edward Fitzgerald in the television series “Cracker”, which won three BAFTA Awards. He went on to score parts of “GoldenEye”, “The World Is Not Enough” and “From Hell” before playing Rubeus Hagrid in the “Harry Potter” series. Coltrane was reportedly hand-picked by author JK Rowling. He sits outside the top ten on ITV’s list of the 50 greatest TV stars. Coltrane has been married to his wife Rhona Gemmell since 1999 and have two children together.
