The Indiana Pacers selected Smits with the second overall pick in the first round of the 1988 NBA draft. The 7-foot-4, 250-pound center played every game of his career as a member of the Pacers from 1988 to 2000. He was named to the NBA Rookie First Team in 1989 and was named an NBA All-Star nearly a decade later. In 1998, he finished his career with nearly 13,000 points, 5,277 rebounds and 1,111 blocks. In addition to 6.1 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, Smits is averaging 14.8 points per game. Between 1989 and 2000, Smits played a total of 867 regular-season and 100-plus postseason games for the Pacers. After Smits officially retired from the league, he became heavily involved in collecting and racing vintage motorcycles for motocross.
