Richard Shelby is a United States Senator who has a net worth of $20 million. Shelby was born on May 6, 1934 in Birmingham, Alabama, and took office on January 3, 1987. Shelby attended the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and went on to serve as U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama, special assistant attorney general for Alabama and city attorney.
Shelby was originally elected as a conservative Democrat, also known as part of the boll weevil. He later became a member of the Republican Party during the Clinton administration. Shelby is also an active participant in the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar; Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs; Appropriations Committee and Select Committee on Aging. Shelby was a well-known member of the Delta Chi and Phi Alpha Delta fraternities while in college. He has several buildings named after him, including the University of Alabama Shelby Hall Research Center, the Richard C. and Annette N. Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building, the Auburn University Senatorial Chad C. and Annette N. Shelby Ph.D. Engineering Technology Center, and Shelby Hall House at the University of South Alabama. Richard Shelby is currently married to Annette Shelby and have two children, Claude and Little Richard.
