He visited the People’s Republic of China in 1972 and opened up communication channels. Nixon also signed an anti-ballistic missile treaty with the Soviet Union. He fought cancer and illegal drugs, enforced desegregation, implemented environmental reforms, and reformed health care and benefits. In 1972, Nixon was taken away by a large margin. His second term led to the Watergate scandal. In lieu of being impeached, he resigned and was pardoned by his successor, Gerald Ford. Nixon wrote nine books and traveled the world during his retirement. Richard married Pat Ryan in 1940 and she died in 1993. The couple has two children. Richard Nixon died of a stroke on April 22, 1994, at the age of 81.
