Richard Whalley Anthony Curtis was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1956, obtained a degree in English Language and Literature from Christ Church, Oxford University, and soon began working as an entertainment writer.
In the late 1970s he started working on BBC Radio 3’s “The Atkinsons” before transitioning to screen comedy writing. He has since created the Black Jazz series, the Mr. Bean series, the romantic comedies Tall and Bernard the Elf. Curtis is probably best known for the few films he wrote over the next few decades: Four Weddings and a Funeral starring Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant, Notting Hill , The Diary of Bridget Jones and True Love. Curtis earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for “Four Weddings and a Funeral.” He won his first BAFTA Best Screenplay Award in 2004 for “True Love,” and a 2006 Emmy for Outstanding Production for a Television Movie and a Miniseries, Movie, or 2006 for “The Girl in the Cafe”.
