Rex Tillerson is an American businessman, engineer, and former chairman and chief executive of Exxon Mobil Corporation. He served as the 69th Secretary of State under President Donald Trump. Rex Wayne Tillerson was born on March 23, 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas. As a child, he was named Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Tillerson attended Huntsville High School and then the University of Texas at Austin. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. In 2006, he was named a Distinguished Engineering Graduate by UT Austin.

Tillerson was a production engineer at ExxonMobil from 1975 to 1989. Later, from 1989 to 1992, he was General Manager of the Central Production Department. Tillerson briefly served as a production consultant before being promoted to president of Esso Exploration and Production Collat in 1995. He was named Executive Vice President of ExxonMobil following the merger of ExxonMobil and ExxonMobil in 1999. Tillerson was elected chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil in 2006. The title of CEO was previously held by businessman Lee Raymond.
ExxonMobil acquired XTO Energy in 2009 for $31 billion in stock. XTO is a major oil and gas energy company. Tillerson is also close to Russia’s Vladimir Putin. In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Friendship by Putin. Tillerson’s other business ventures include the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the American Petroleum Institute and the Business Roundtable.
Tillerson is a past president of the Boy Scouts of America. During his tenure, he advocated for openly gay youth to join their military. Tillerson opposes sanctions, arguing that they are very ineffective. He also supports free trade. Tillerson is a member of the Republican Party. He supported Mitt Romney during his 2012 presidential campaign. Tillerson was nominated to be the U.S. Secretary of State in the Trump administration. He was sworn in on February 1, 2017. President Donald Trump fired Tillerson in March 2018. He is succeeded by Mike Pompeo.
