Reince Priebus is an American politician, lawyer and former chairman of the Republican National Committee. Under President Donald Trump, he served as White House chief of staff for six months. Priebus was born Reinhold Richard Priebus on March 18, 1972 in Dover, New Jersey. His father Richard is a former electrician and his mother Dimitra is a real estate agent. Priebus grew up in Wisconsin, where he attended George Nelson Trepper High School in Kenosha. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1994 with degrees in English and Political Science. Priebus continued his education at the University of Miami School of Law in Coral Gables, Florida. He graduated summa cum laude with a JD degree in 1998.

Priebus’s passion for politics dates back to his time at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He has served as student body president and college Republican president. During his time at the University of Miami, he worked part-time as a clerk for the Wisconsin Court of Appeals and Supreme Court. He joined the Wisconsin State Bar in 1998. Priebus practiced law for several years at the law firm of Michael Best & Friedrich LLP. He works in corporate litigation and became a partner in 2006.
In 2004, Priebus challenged incumbent Democrat Robert Wirch for a seat in the Wisconsin state Senate. He lost the political race. Three years later he was elected as chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party. He was the youngest politician to hold the position at the time. Priebus was named general counsel of the Republican National Convention in 2009 under Chairman Michael Steele. He resigned from the position in December 2010.
Priebus launched a successful campaign in late 2010 as the new chairman of the RNC. He won a match and took the oath on January 14, 2011. He was re-elected for the second semester in January 2013, followed by the third semester in January 2015. In November 2016, Priebus was elected by President Donald Trump as White House Chief of Staff. He was sworn in on January 20, 2017. John F. Kelly succeeded Priebus after only six months in office.
