Born Billy Joe McCombs in Spurs, Texas, on October 19, 1927, he briefly attended Southwestern University in Georgetown before joining the U.S. Army for two years.
He later joined the University of Texas at Austin, where he attended business and law schools. In the early 1950s, he married and left college to sell cars at George Jones Ford in Corpus Christi. By 1958, McCombs and a fellow salesman, Austin Hemphill, had moved to San Antonio to form Hemphill-McCombs Ford, which would later become the foundation of the Red McCombs Automotive Group. A good start, he has become the owner of at least 55 dealerships and counting. Already well known in the business world, he is often referred to as Red, and he ventured into the energy industry after founding McCombs Energy in Houston. But that’s not all, as he is the co-founder of Clear Channel Communications and chairman of Academi (formerly Blackwater Worldwide) and the former owner of the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Vikings. He was actively involved in thoroughbred horse racing, cattle raising, oil drilling, and building condominiums, and even served as a lead partner at Walmac Farm for a few years. The secret to Red’s success was recently revealed in a new autobiography called “Big Red.” He is married with three children and currently lives in San Antonio, Texas.
