Ray Tomlinson is an American computer programmer, inventor, and electrical engineer. He is credited as the inventor of modern email and uses the “@” symbol to connect usernames to destinations. Tomlinson was born on April 23, 1941 in Amsterdam, New York. He grew up in Well Mills and attended Broadbine Central School in Broadbine, New York. Tomlinson attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. There, he participated in IBM’s internship program and graduated in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. Two years later, he earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Profession
Tomlinson started in 1967 for the R&D companies Bolt, Beranek and Newman. He helped develop the company’s TENEX operating system. In 1971, Tomlinson was able to combine the CPYNET and SNDMSG programs to implement the first e-mail program on the ARPANET system. He also chose the “@” symbol to separate the user from the host. When asked, Tomlinson claimed the first email sent was gibberish and completely forgettable.

Ray Tomlinson passed away on March 5, 2016 at the age of 74. According to reports, the cause of his death was a heart attack. He left behind a wife and children. Over the years, Tomlinson has received numerous awards, including the George R. Stibitz Computer Pioneer Award, the IEEE Internet Award, and the Prince of Asturias Award. In 2012, he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame.
